Basic Obedience Commands

When training your dog Basic Dog Obedience Training you should use positive reinforcement training. Positive reinforcement is a great way to teach your dog desirable behaviors. When using positive reinforcement a stimulus (treat, praise or food) should be given immediately following the desired behavior. Teaching your dog to Sit-
- Grab a handful of treats.
- Train in an area free of distractions
- Move the treat over the dogs head causing him to naturally sit.
- As the dogs legs are bending say, “Sit”
- As soon as the dog sits you praise him with a treat and a “Good Job”
- If the dog does something wrong don’t punish him just start again.
- Do this for about 10 minutes a day and your dog will learn very quickly.
Teaching your Dog to Stay-
After teaching your dog the Sit Command it will be a lot easier teaching him to stay. The stay command means “Do not move”.
- Grab a handful of treats
- Have your dog sit using the sit command.
- Put your palm in front of your dogs face.
- While stepping back using your right foot say “Stay”
- Take two or three steps back. (You may want to use the stay command again)
- Pause for about 10 seconds and then return to your dog.
- Once you return to your dog treat him with praise.
- Repeat a couple of times a day and he will pick up on the Stay command quickly.
Teaching your Dog to Come-
After teaching your dog the Sit Command and Stay Command it will be a lot easier teaching him to come.
- Grab a handful of treats
- Have your dog sit using the sit command.
- Put your palm in front of the dogs face.
- Walk away using the Stay Command
- Walk 10-15 feet away and pause for a couple of seconds
- Tell the dog to come in an excited voice.
- This will cause your dog to come.
- When the dog reaches you praise him.
- Repeat a couple of times a day.
Training your dog the Basic Obedience Commands can be difficult at first, but with a little practice it can become very easy. It will be beneficial for both you and your dog.
